Syrah

2022 Syrah

Our 2022 Syrah represents a bit of a turning point for Troon Vineyard. This wine is made up of approximately 50% of our older syrah vines (Tablas Creek clone), and roughly 50% of our new younger syrah vines (Joseph Phelps clone and clone 174). With our warm days and cool nights, the Applegate Valley is an ideal growing environment for syrah, and we take advantage of this fact by having four different clones of syrah planted across our almost one-hundred-acre site in three distinct soil types to showcase how well Syrah can capture that unique sense of place in the glass.

The fruit for the 2022 Troon Vineyard Syrah was harvested between September 27th and October 11th, 2022, and put into open-top bins and one large open-top wooden foudre with, on average, 30% whole cluster. Including whole clusters can enhance the spice and pepper characteristics of syrah, while broadening the mid-palate and bringing more freshness to the wine. Like all Troon Vineyard wines, the ferments started spontaneously from indigenous yeasts with no additives. The wine was handled gently during fermentation with just one punch-down or foot-treading per day, and the wine proceeded to ferment outside until it finished roughly three to four weeks later. The wine was then pressed off to age in neutral French oak barrels for 18 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered with a small dose of sulfur added at bottling.
